Roll returns process
The roll returns process is performed starting from the Roll Count day and must be concluded within 10 days from this date.
For example, in 2013 the two Roll Count days are:
- 1st March 2013, with the period concluding on 10th March 2013
- 1st July 2013, with the period concluding on 10th July 2013.
To perform the roll returns process:
- Preview the roll return to list any validation errors with the current students' data. See Previewing roll return errors and warnings.
- Resolve any errors listed for each student by updating their data. See Roll return errors and warnings.
Note: It is often the case that one incorrect field value will generate multiple errors on the report.

- Repeat steps 1 and 2 until there are no more validation errors listed on the report.

- Print the official aggregate reports. See Printing the roll return aggregate reports.
Note: The reports are Draft outside each 10-day roll returns period and can be checked but not signed.
- Ask the relevant people at your organisation to:
- check the aggregate reports
- approve and sign them if they are correct.
- If there are any errors found by the approvers, repeat from step 1.
- Mail the signed, printed aggregate reports to the Ministry of Education.
- As the authorised user, connect to the Ministry of Education web service. See Connecting to the NZ MOE web service.
- Send the latest MOE file to the Ministry of Education, after confirming that the paper aggregate reports have been signed and posted. See Sending the MOE file to the NZ MOE web service.
Note: If the MOE file requires updating later, during the roll return period, repeat all steps from step 1.
