Subject Assessment Maintenance - Area tab - Area sub-tab

Use the Area sub-tab of the Area tab to maintain details of subject assessment areas.

Read only results

Some of the results columns in Student Results Maintenance may be greyed out, making them read only. In the following example, the Weighted Average and Ranking fields are greyed out because they have a formula associated with them.

Student Results Maintenance - All Students tab (cut down)

The result column is automatically set to read only if:

If you have a custom calculation procedure you can manually set a result column to read only by selecting a Result Type with a SynergyMeaning of Heading. See luReportResultType lookup table in the System maintenance manual.

Assessment Area fields and buttons

Fields

The Assessment Area area contains information about what the subject area relates to. The student’s report prints differently depending upon the type of assessment being reported.

Field

Description

Result Group

Group of subject assessment areas that this area is a part of.

Tip: Use to create groups if you have a large number of assessment areas to manage. You can work with the groups instead of each individual assessment area in Student Results Maintenance. See Student Results Maintenance - Single Student tab.

Note: Values are maintained in the luReportResultGroup lookup table. See luReportResultGroup lookup table in the System maintenance manual.

Result Type

Result values available for the subject assessment area.

Result types restrict the valid values that you can enter in this field. This is so that the data presented on reports is consistent.

Once you have selected a result type you can click Find... button next to the External Link field to link an external learning standard to the result type.

Note: Values are maintained in the luReportResultType lookup table. See luReportResultType lookup table in the System maintenance manual.

External Link

Identifier to link to a relevant external learning standard. Click Find... button if you do not know the learning standard identifier.

Subject Assessment Maintenance - Area tab - Area sub-tab (External Link)

The following external learning standards are currently supported:

  • AusVELS assessment areas, such as for German language, until replaced by Victorian Curriculum F–10
  • NCEA (New Zealand National Certificate of Education Achievement) are currently supported
  • Victorian Curriculum.

Note: The Result Type selected must have the relevant SynergyMeaning specified in the lookup table. Currently, result types with a SynergyMeaning of VICCURRIC and NCEA are supported. See luReportResultType lookup table in the System maintenance manual.

Default Result Classification

Result classification to use by default when entering student results. See:

The result classification is used in:

  • Australian organisations to indicate students whose results are not comparable to other students in the class, such as students in a modified program

Student Results Maintenance - Single Student tab (Classification field)

  • New Zealand schools to withdraw students from an NCEA standard

Lookup Table Maintenance - luReportResultClassification (cut down)

  • organisations using the Victorian Curriculum to indicate the reason why students given the (DNP) Did Not Participate result are unable to complete the selected assessment.

Note: You must enter a result classification when a student is given the (DNP) Did Not Participate result.

The classifications are maintained in the luReportResultClassification lookup table. See luReportResultClassification lookup table in the System maintenance manual.

Note: The Classification field is only displayed in student results if the Show Result Classification field is selected for the subject assessment. See Subject Assessment Maintenance - Summary tab - Summary sub-tab.

Reporting area fields

Field

Description

Show on Screen

Select this field to have the result as well as the heading for the subject assessment area displayed on the Student Results Maintenance window.

In the following example, the calculated Aggregate Monthly Test Results 'assessment area' is displayed.

Student Results Maintenance - All Students tab (Force read only example)

If you clear this field, the assessment area is not displayed. This is useful for:

  • Calculated 'assessment areas' that are used for calculating or summarising results, and used in subsequent formulas. You may decide that the teachers do not need to see these intermediate calculations.
  • Old 'assessment areas' such as Average, which have been superseded by the Weighted Average 'assessment area' that you want to keep for the present.

Force Read Only

Clear the field to allow users to enter or edit results on the Student Results Maintenance window. This is the default setting.

Select the field to prevent the assessment area from being updated on the Student Results Maintenance window. The heading and the values are greyed out, preventing users from overriding the calculated results.

In the following example the calculated Aggregate Monthly Test Results 'assessment area' is displayed on the screen but cannot be edited.
Student Results Maintenance - All Students tab (Force read only example)

Print on Report

Print the assessment area item on the academic report.

Mark Out of

Specify the maximum numeric value for the mark.

Overall Result

Select if this is to be the overall result for the students.

Overall Seq

If Overall Result is selected this:

  • is the sequence this assessment area appears on the report within any other overall results
  • can be used to identify one overall result from another for the reports.

Overall Seq 1 and Overall Seq 2 results appear in the Classes tab of Current Student Maintenance. See Current Student Maintenance - Classes tab in the Current students manual.

Weighting Factor

Priority that this assessment is to take in the calculated result.

For example, a weighting factor of 1 is greater than a weighting factor of 0.5.

Summarise to Area

Subject assessments can be combined to produce a single calculated result.

Select a subject assessment from this drop-down list to link the current subject assessment to the selected subject assessment.

See Traditional method of summarising and linking assessment areas.

Expected Result for Area

Select an option from the drop-down list to use the current subject assessment area to enter the expected result of the selected subject assessment area. See Creating subject assessment areas for entering expected results.

When results are entered they are linked to the actual result and displayed on reports to show how far the student progressed during the reporting period.

Note: You cannot delete a subject assessment area that is being used to store an expected result. You must clear this field before Synergetic will allow you to delete the subject assessment area.
